Best things to do in Newport Rhode Island

We had the best time visiting Newport Rhode Island! J spent summers here growing up so it was fun for him to take a trip back and for me to experience it for the first time. Wanted to share my recommendations for top 3 best things to do when visiting this cute coastal town.

Get a Lobster Roll

Skip this one if you're vegetarian or vegan ;) But if you are a carnivore or pescatarian you have got to try an authentic New England lobster roll! Fresh lobster meat with a buttery, lemon, and mayo sauce on a roll is the quintessential summer food in Rhode Island. The best ones we had were at The Lobster Bar and Castle Hill Inn.

Go to the beach!

New England beaches are unique, beautiful and should definitely be on your list of things to do in Newport. We spent a day laying out at Easton's beach which had showers, little shops, lemonade stands and lobster rolls.

Later we watched the sunset at Secret Beach (not linking this one because it's a secret-- make friends with some locals and they'll tell you where it is!).

Happy Hour on the lawn at Castle Hill Inn

I saved the best for last with this one. Castle Hill Inn is a 40 acre luxury estate tucked away about 15 minutes from downtown Newport. The lawn has gorgeous views of Narragansett Bay and is dotted with white adirondack chairs where you can enjoy happy hour, a snack and of course, the sunset. Be sure to book a reservation about 2 weeks in advance to guarantee your spot!

Honorable mentions:

One Pelham East: If you're having a night out in Newport then Pelham needs to be on your list of places to hit. We met up with some friends for cocktails and live music and had a blast!

Scales & Shells: We stopped in for dinner & it was some of the best pasta I've ever had! The ambiance is casual and cozy. Their menu changes regularly but is sure to be loaded with fresh, local seafood. Thinking back to the clam linguine I had

Thames Street: Thames Street is the center of Newport lined with cute shops, local restaurants and bars. We were lucky enough to get an AirBnB right off Thames street so we were able to walk to most everything and had so much fun taking daily strolls and exploring the town on foot. Pro tip: the streets are cobblestone so be careful when in heels!
